Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is a
major public health concern, especially in densely populated areas where
transmission is more likely. It primarily affects the lungs but can also impact other
parts of the body. The disease can be fatal if not treated properly. TB exists in two
forms: latent TB infection, where the bacteria remain inactive, and active TB
disease, which is contagious and symptomatic.
Early identification and prompt treatment are crucial in controlling the spread of
TB. The CDC emphasizes the importance of treating people with latent TB
infection to prevent the development of active TB disease. Respiratory diseases, a
category that includes TB, are illnesses that affect the lungs and other parts of the
respiratory system. Other common respiratory diseases include asthma, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. These conditions can
have a significant impact on individuals' quality of life and require a
comprehensive approach for management and treatment. Public health initiatives
like those at NSMCH are vital in raising awareness, providing education, and
facilitating access to treatment to reduce the burden of these diseases.
In my capacity as the Head of the Department of Tuberculosis and
Respiratory Diseases at Netaji Subhas Medical College and Hospital
(NSMCH), I am entrusted with the responsibility of guiding a
distinguished team in our collective pursuit of excellence in both clinical
care and academic endeavors. Our department is dedicated to
confronting the significant challenges posed by respiratory diseases,
particularly tuberculosis, with a focus on delivering cutting-edge
treatment, advancing medical research, and nurturing the next generation
of healthcare professionals.
