Department of Microbiology

Overview

The Department of Anatomy is a fundamental discipline within the medical sciences, focusing on the structural organization of living organisms. It is a branch that delves into the intricate details of the human body, exploring its systems, organs, tissues, and cells. Through dissection and microscopy, anatomy departments provide essential knowledge that underpins the understanding of how the body functions and the basis for diagnosing and treating diseases. They often work closely with other departments such as physiology and pathology to give students a comprehensive understanding of the human body in health and disease.

Departmental Objective

Teaching MBBS and M.D. Microbiology involves understanding the natural history of infectious diseases and learning the etiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention of infections within the community. It includes training undergraduates and postgraduates in the theoretical and practical aspects of bacteriology, immunology, virology, parasitology, and mycology.

By the end of the Microbiology course, an MBBS student will be able to describe the etiology and pathogenesis of common infectious diseases and understand the mechanisms of host-parasite relationships. They will be equipped to investigate common infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on the appropriate methods of specimen collection, laboratory diagnosis, and proper interpretation of laboratory test results, while also being aware of the salient features of uncommon infectious diseases. Furthermore, the student will be able to organize the prevention and control of communicable diseases in community or hospital settings and understand the different types of biomedical waste, their potential risks, and their management.
